Internal assessment component: - Individual investigation

  “IA”用于测试学生的研究能力。

  各部分的评级旨在检查各部分对IA整体进展的相对贡献。

  以下各节的详细说明旨在帮助学生清楚地集中注意力并实现IA的主要目的,而不是采用不相关的方法。

  Personal Engagement:

This section would be marked on basis of the requirements fulfilled. The IA should reflect:

  1. Evidences of independent thought process, Personal interest of the student, creativity and their curiosity should be given for the choice of topic, the method of inquiry and presentation of the overall IA.

  2. Notable input and initiative should be undertaken.

  3. Relation and connectivity between the syllabus and individual thoughts should be clear.

  4. Self explanatory research questions should be avoided.

  5. Research question has to be framed on basis of the personal experience of the student. Proper justification is given for the research question.

  Exploration

This section would be marked on basis of the requirements fulfilled. The IA should reflect:

  1. An emphasized, focused and research question should be answered properly in the IA.

  2. Individual ideas and thought process should be displayed in such a way that it portrays a workable technique.

  3. The information provided should target the problem rather than a general explanation of the topic.

  4. Scientific protocols should be used to give proper information of students understanding about the problem.

  5. Later, the link between one information to another should be such that it draws the reader/examiner to a proper conclusion.

  6. Safety and health care should be taken into consideration. Proper precaution should be noted as an evidence of student performing certain acts.

  Analysis

This section would be marked on basis of the requirements fulfilled. The IA should reflect:1. A proper processing of the data is evident.

  2. This processing should be an attempt to explain and answer the research question.

  3. Scope of limitation should be cleared in the IA.

  4. Uncertainty calculation could be shown, showing your own mistakes in the collection process.

  Evaluation

This section would be marked on basis of the requirements fulfilled.

  1. The data collection, Processing and the conclusion must once again be scrutinized.

  2. The connectivity between conclusion and the research question should be stated clearly.

  3. The adjustment of data should be done to draw a proper conclusion to the original aim of the IA.

  4. Evaluation should provide sufficient evidences to rely on the conclusion that the student came up to.

  5. The scope of limitation should be written rather than reiteration that there is variability.

  Communication

  1. The main aspects of the IA and the research write up should be considered.

  2. The report should be clearly and logically presented.

  3. The info in the IA should directly aim the research questions problem rather than an explanation given in general about the issue.

  4. Subject specific conventions should be in correct format. Correct units should be used.

  5. Proper headings for the graphs, tables and connectivity in the overall representation should be correctly placed. The task produced should be complex and commensurate with the level of the course. It should require a purposeful research question and the scientific rationale for it. The marked exemplar material in the teacher support materials will demonstrate that the assessment will be rigorous and of the same standard as the assessment in the previous courses.

Some of the possible tasks include:

  a hands-on laboratory investigation

using a spreadsheet for analysis and modelling

extracting data from a database and analysing it graphically

producing a hybrid of spreadsheet/database work with a traditional hands-on investigation

Determining the Acceleration Due to Gravity

  with a Simple Pendulum

Quintin T. Nethercott and M. Evelynn Walton

Department of Physics, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, 84112, UT, USA

  (Dated: March 6, 2013)

Using a simple pendulum the acceleration due to gravity in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

was found to be (9.8 +/- .1) m/s2. The model was constructed with the square of the period of oscillations in the small angle approximation being proportional to the length of

the pendulum. The model was supported by the data using a linear fit with chi-squared

value: 0.77429 and an r-square value: 0.99988. This experimental value for gravity agrees

well with and is within one standard deviation of the accepted value for this location.

  I. INTRODUCTION

The study of the motion of the simple pendulum provided valuable insights into the gravitational force acting on the students at the University of Utah. The experiment was of value since the gravitational force is one all people continuously experience and the collection and analysis of data proved to be a rewarding learning experience in error analysis. Furthermore, this experiment tested a mathematical model for the value of gravity that that makes use of the small-angle approximation and the proportional relationship between the square of the period of oscillations to the length of the pendulum.Sources of error for this procedure included precision in both length and time measurement tools, reaction time of the stopwatch holder, and the accuracy of the stopwatch with respect to the lab atomic clock. The final result of g takes into account the correction for the error introduced using the approximation. There are opportunities to correct for the effects of mass distribution, air buoyancy and damping, and string stretching[1]. Our results do not take these effects into account at this time.

  A. Theoretical Introduction

The general form of Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation can be used to find the force between any two bodies.
